Pet food companies are continuously changing their recipes for pet food. As a result, even though the following list contains foods that were low in carbs at the time of compiling this list, we strongly urge you continue to verify the dry matter carb content from time to time.  Also, use the Nutritional Analysis figures whenever possible, as these are true numbers for each flavor, while the Guaranteed Analysis numbers are averages.  Unless otherwise noted, most carbs listed here are calculated with the GA. If no numbers for Ash are listed, use a median number like 1.5% for all foods other than those that are just meat and water with no supplements, which will have no ash.

Evo 95%     These foods are grain free.  Buy at any Specialty Pet store or online.  Carbs are calculated with the both the Nutritional Analysis and the Guaranteed Analysis from the Evo website.  The NA numbers are the more correct numbers.  Some of the numbers for GA total more than 100%, which skews the carb content.

A compounded, beef based insulin with an amino acid count only one away from the cat's own. Go to their website for a printable form your vet can fill out and fax to them. They will send a free 5.0ml vial of U100 PZI to your vet (takes approximately 3 weeks), which you should mention you'd like to have passed along to you. Make sure your vet gives them your name and RX number so you can reorder direct. U40, and U100 are the recommended strengths available. Less expensive than manufactured insulin, but a shorter shelf life of only 6 months, although it lasts longer for many if handled carefully.

Hypurin Bovine PZI is a manufactured bovine based insulin.  Citizens from the US can import Hypurin by filling out an application to the USDA to import or transport controlled material or organisms or vectors.  The one time permit application fee is $141.00 with an annual renewal fee of $91.00. The approval process takes 4-6 weeks, with no guarantees.
