These departments are responsible for adjusting nearly 400,000 claims annually and handling 350,000 telephone calls from VPI policyholders requesting information and assistance. I was also responsible for company compliance with Department of Insurance statutes and regulations, as well as guiding the internal and external human resources staff in employment law-related management issues.

         ·· Joined this start-up veterinary biotechnology company to build a customer service support effort around the first of many new products nearing market readiness. Participated in the successful launch of over a dozen new veterinary medical diagnostics and therapeutics over three years. Also participated in the successful IPO of the company on the NASDAQ exchange in July of 1997. Had five direct reports in three functional groups, including technical services, and fifteen indirect reports. Was responsible for a budget of almost four million dollars annually.

         ·· Conducted independent research into the metabolic basis for type-II diabetes in cats. This research led to the successful application and issuance on March 20, 2001, of United States patent #6,203,825 entitled "Method and Composition to protect an Obligate Carnivore From a Disease of Abnormal Carbohydrate Metabolism," with Elizabeth Hodgkins as sole inventor. This patent and  research led to the introduction in June, 2001, of a new ethical feline diabetes management food by one of the world’s largest pet food companies.

           ·· As Editor in Chief, was responsible for directing ten-member Editorial Board which supervised twenty-five staff members in article selection, editing, and publication of the Journal. Prepared annual business plan and directed Symposium Editors in the planning and execution of the Journal’s 1996 Spring Symposium.

 

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Division of Colgate-Palmolive, Inc., Topeka, Kansas

    Director of Veterinary Technical Service & Customer Service, 1987-93

           ·· Simultaneously directed both of this billion-dollar company’s veterinary technical and lay customer service groups. These groups were comprised of forty staff members including veterinarians, information systems support technicians, service representatives, and administrative staff. These departments provided direct technical support for all existing products (48 SKUs) in all customer channels, customer research and product use information in support of new product development and launch, and technical training of Hill’s Professional Service Representatives, veterinarians, and hospital personnel in the use of Hill’s products to manage disease and maintain health in companion animals. Was responsible for all aspects of budgeting and business planning for this multi-million dollar consolidated department and successfully implemented statistical process control and other TQM methods within department.

Additional functional responsibilities assumed during 1985-93 at Hill’s:

        ·· Corporate Media Spokesperson — After extensive training with Hill’s corporate public relations agency in New York, served as exclusive provider of official company and industry-related information to newspapers, magazines, radio, and television interviewers, with special emphasis on technical/nutritional aspects of Hill’s products and services.

        ·· Corporate Regulatory Liaison — assisted Hill’s General Counse in the management of the corporate relationship with agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, American Association of Feed Control Officials, and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

        ·· Technical Writer — Authored numerous professional and lay- audience articles, as well as two textbook chapters, on various aspects of veterinary nutrition and general veterinary medicine.

        ··Assisted in the development and maintenance of Hill’s relationship with the U.S. and Canadian colleges and schools of veterinary medicine. Traveled extensively to make educational presentations and represent Hill’s before veterinary and paraveterinary groups of all types and sizes.
